Endoscopy

St Luke provides a variety of endoscopic procedures. Endoscopy allows for the examination of body organs or cavities for aid in diagnosing, treatment and documentation of abnormalities. These procedures are typically done on an outpatient basis requiring a short stay at the hospital lasting anywhere from 2 - 8 hours. Sedation is given to reduce discomfort during the procedure. These procedures have little to no postoperative recuperation time and allow a rapid return to normal life-style.

Types of Endoscopic Procedures offered at St. Luke Hospital include:

Bronchoscopy - visualization of the trachea, bronchi and lungs

Colonoscopy - visualization of colon from rectum to the ileocecal valve

Cystoscopy - visualization of the lower urinary tract, including the urethra, bladder and ureteral openings

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) - visualization of the esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum

Laryngoscopy - visualization of the interior of the larynx

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Cancer survival is closely related to early clinical diagnosis. If you have noticed blood in your stools or have a family history of colon cancer and are 50 years old or older, please visit with your Physician about scheduling a colonscopy today.
